Sensory Re-patterning work focuses on the cultivation of vision, sensitivity and rhythm in the use of movement as a modality in bodywork. Movement is used to create a sensation and feeling in the body. The focus in the work is not the movement itself, but the feeling state invoked by the creation of sensation in the body. The goal is to create a sensation of grace and ease in the body, a sense the client may not be able to create themselves, yet one which can be of fundamental importance. It is sensation which informs the motor nervous system of how and where to move.
Movement organizes the nervous system toward appropriate function in our neonatal state and can contribute to better organization of the adult nervous system as well. Through habit we learn use-patterned movements and thereby over the years deplete our repertoire of available movements. Through the sensory experience received in a bodywork session we can re-inform our nervous system about the variety of movement available to us.
The work focuses on the movement of the joints and to gentle rocking of the entire body, so rubbing of the skin is not necessary. However, this type of work is often integrated with other modalities, such as Swedish massage and even Deep Tissue Sculpting. Many clients will find this type of work the most relaxing of all types of bodywork, since the focus is so deep within the body, at the skeletal level.
