Swedish massage, also known as circulatory massage, is a healing art which has many benefits for the client.  Benefits of Swedish massage include increased circulation, lymphatic drainage, reduced stress, lowered blood pressure, faster recovery from workouts, headache reduction, and more.

A typical session will last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, sometimes longer.  The ideal session will take place in a comfortable and relaxing space.  The practitioner will generally utilize things such as soft lighting, soothing music, and a well-padded table covered with clean comfortable sheets to help create this setting.  Sometimes candles and aromatherapy are used, depending on the client’s preferences.

The work is best received when all clothing and jewelry has been removed.  A warm, comfortable drape is used to cover the entire body, except for the head and the part of the body being worked on by the practitioner.  Using an oil, lotion or gel to help reduce friction and facilitate movement, the practitioner uses their hands and arms to apply strokes to the client, which range from broad and sweeping to specific and isolated.

Some of the ways Swedish massage helps to facilitate greater health is by increasing blood and lymph flow, aiding digestion, and giving the client a deeper awareness of their own bodies.  It can also help alleviate soreness after intense workouts. Since circulating fluids is a major focus of this type of bodywork, it is a good idea to drink plenty of water before and after a session.
